Here in the Chicagoland area, people are wearing RED today as part of the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. Many people still do not realize that Heart Disease is the #1 killer of women over the age of 20, according to the AHA. The upside to this? It’s largely preventable.
They say that cardiovascular disease kills MORE women than the next 5 causes of death, combined. And that includes all forms of cancer. 460,000 women die every year from this epidemic, which is about one woman every single minute. Folks, these are staggering statistics.
Why is the death rate higher for women? Tragically, women usually focus more on the health of their partners, their children and/or their parents. They tend to ignore the warning signs before it’s too late. What are some things to look for?
* Pain or tightness in the chest, left arm or jaw
* Chronic sleep issues, possibly accompanied by persistent perspiration
* Shortness of breath
* Flu like symptoms, such as nausea, headache, back pain
What are some simple steps you can take TODAY?
* Eat healthier. Choose baked over fried. Choose home-cooked rather than fast food.
* Make every effort to stop smoking. Whatever it takes!
* Get off the couch and from in front of the computer and MOVE your body every single day.
* See your doctor. Investigate your family history. Have your cholesterol checked today.
You are alive and you are valuable. YOU have the power to turn the tables on this silent killer. Make the commitment to lessen your risk and share the information with the women in your life.
