Green Moms on the Go!

Green Moms are busy moms!!  We have groceries to buy, library books to return, packages to drop at the post office.  Sometimes, it seems like we have a never ending list of things to do, places to go and people to see.  Can you relate?

Now normally, January is a brutally cold month here in the Midwest.  It can be difficult to recognize each other because we’re bundled from head to toe!  And cars aren’t exactly “fuel efficient” during those long winter months.

This past weekend was much warmer than usual and I was able to get by with just a jacket.  So, instead of contributing car exhaust to our neighborhood environment, I decided to get my errands done, enjoy some fresh air, and get some exercise at the same time.

This bike was a gift from my husband last Mother’s Day.  Isn’t it cute?  The front basket is handy enough for my library books, packages and mail for the post office, and even a few things from the grocery store.  During nice weather, this is an especially fun way to visit local garage sales.

And whether I’m running errands on my bicycle or driving in the car, I always carry a set of “green” bags with me.  It amazes me to see how many plastic bags leave a grocery store with someone who is shopping for an entire week.  Our local stores don’t even ask the question “paper or plastic?” anymore.

This is one of my favorites:

I picked this up at Whole Foods a couple of years ago and it still works well to this day.  All kinds of items have been transported in these bags.  They are sturdy, easy to carry and green.  A backpack works great as well on the bicycle, especially since there are so many different compartments.

Just wanted to share with everyone.  Going green is actually fun and inexpensive and something we can all do.  Each little step is one in the right direction.

To your health and happiness,

Green Mom

  1. I have that same bag from Whole Foods and it’s perfect. I can’t tell from your picture how big yours is, but mine is about half the size of normal reusable grocery bags which makes it great for carrying smaller items – like books!

    • And it lasts a long time, doesn’t it? I picked up several of these bags because, I agree, they are SO versatile. I also like the fact that they wipe clean pretty easily. Love to hear from someone who enjoys them as much as I do.

  2. I love this! Our goal is to get our youngest off training wheels soon. Even though we can’t hit grocery stores on bikes (scary roads I hate to even drive on) but I would love for him to join me and my 9 year old on our Sunday morning run! And I love the garage sale idea! Maybe once a month with a few dollars from their piggy banks! Thanks for the idea!

    • Thanks Vicky!

Isn’t teaching kiddos to ride bikes fun? I’m so pleased to hear that your kids are taking part in a Sunday run/bike ride with you. Great exercise and time spent as a family. Nothing beats it.

I remember going to garage sales on my bike as a kid and bringing home little trinkets for my mom. As a matter of fact, she still has some of them today. Like I said, it’s a way to enjoy fresh air, get some exercise and visit with people in the neighborhood. Cheers!
